Press Release

Youngkin: "There will be no new taxes"

Mar 19, 2024

ICYMI: Governor Glenn Youngkin continues to travel across the Commonwealth to make sure Virginians are aware of the harmful policies included in the Democrats’ Backward Budget.

The Backward Budget includes $2.6 billion in tax increases on Virginia families, undoing the progress made to lower the cost of living for Virginians with $5 billion in tax relief signed into law by Governor Youngkin over the last two years.

In Chesapeake, Governor Youngkin reiterated his commitment to protect Virginians from the tax increases in the Backward Budget.

“There will be no new taxes,” Youngkin said. “So, we’re going to get rid of the tax increase.”

Governor Youngkin also made clear that tax increases are not necessary to fund shared, bipartisan priorities. Governor Youngkin delivered both $5 billion in tax relief and record funding for education, behavioral health, and law enforcement.

“It is not an either-or moment – don’t listen to the scare tactics,” Youngkin said. “We do not need to raise taxes, and we can still invest in these top priorities, and it’s exactly what we have done for the last two years.”

Governor Youngkin is not going to let Virginia Democrats take Virginia backward with regressive tax increases and harmful policies. He’s going to continue to move the Commonwealth forward with commonsense leadership to make Virginia the best place to live, work, and raise a family.

ABC 13: Governor Youngkin criticizes proposed Virginia budget in a speech at Chesapeake

Governor Glenn Youngkin criticized the proposed budget while giving a speech to a group of supporters in Chesapeake on Monday.

He emphasized the improvements in employment in the state, as well as a decrease in crime. The governor also focused the majority of his speech on the tax increases in the proposed budget.

“This budget is not just backward but literally undermines the tenants to the success that we’ve had over the last two years,” Youngkin said.

He believes there’s a better route to improve the Commonwealth without increasing taxes.

“There will be no new taxes,” Youngkin said. “So we’re going to get rid of the tax increase. We can still fund education and teacher salaries and law enforcement and behavioral health. There’s plenty of money in the system to accomplish an ‘and moment’ and not an ‘or moment.'”

…

Governor Youngkin plans to go around the Commonwealth to let Virginians know “we’re going backward not forwards.”
